improvisation is the beginning of all things. It‘s the essence of music. there is no ‘eine kleine Nachtmusik‘ by Mozart without him improvising. It is an absurdity that classical music students no longer learn how to improvise. It is assumed that the art of improvisation has been dislodged by the art of interpretation. But is a musician able to interpret a composition if he is not able to spontaneously invent music? I do not believe so. Because interpretation needs musical invention. So why do so many virtuosic musicians fear their own creative abilities? Why are they still satisfied with repeating structures that have been played a million times before without changing any contexts? Without having a plan for the composition‘s narrative?
